Your date wants to be impressed this Valentine’s Day. They want a special treat on a romantic evening. But let’s face it, some of the traditional expectations of this holiday have lost their warm and fuzzy feelings. Take back the authenticity and reclaim the day with these no-fuss, true-to-you, simple Valentine’s Day ideas to celebrate love and friendship with a little black box. No, not the one with bling inside … read on to find out what your date really wants this Valentine’s Day. (Hint: It’s Black Box Wines and it’s affordable wine. Oh, and you, of course.)
You’ve heard that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. Making a meal together is a unifying and satisfying way to spend an evening. If you have the time, plan the meal over a glass of Black Box red wine and shop together for ingredients. Want to up the romantic quotient? Replicate a picnic vibe, complete with a cozy blanket, fluffy pillows and your favorite box wine. And keep in mind this sentiment from Julia Child, “I enjoy cooking with wine, sometimes I even put it in the food.” Consider flank steak with chimichurri (recipe below) paired with Black Box Malbec for an impressive yet easy meal. Step one: a glass of delicious boxed red wine for each of you. Step two: another glass of wine, well, because it’s Valentine’s Day.
Make the sauce and grill the steak ahead of time. Score both sides of the steak with a sharp knife. Mix together the marinade ingredients. Add steak and marinade to a large freezer bag, seal the bag, and turn to coat the steak well. Chill and marinate for at least 1 hour and up to overnight.
Preheat your grill. Discard the marinade and sprinkle each side of the steak with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Place the steak on the hot grill. When the steak has cooked to your preferred level of doneness, remove from the grill and place on a cutting board. Cover with aluminum foil and let rest for 10 minutes.
Cut into thin slices, against the grain, and at a slight diagonal so that the slices are wide. Place in a portable container for assembly on location.
Chimichurri Sauce: Puree all ingredients in a food processor until everything is well blended. Transfer to a bowl or container with an air-tight lid and cover until ready to use.
When ready to serve, top each slice of baguette with a slice of steak and top with chimichurri sauce.
Valentine’s Day falls on a Wednesday in 2018, and weeknights can be super busy. If you have to wait until the weekend to spend time together, consider leaving a surprise gift for your special someone. Something small and delightful in an unexpected spot is sure to bring a smile. A handwritten note goes a long way to show you care. Don’t love your handwriting? Print out your favorite poem (Neruda always works) and sign it with a kiss. For something a little more practical, a set of pretty wine cups (like the awesome insulated Stainless Steel ones from our Rewards program) pairs well with 500mL Black Box Rosé and gives your date a sip to remember you by.
Book a single class, or better yet a series, for two – the promise of time together to learn something new will invigorate and revitalize. Taking up a new hobby can be a uniting experience that may lead to a lifetime of fun memories. Consider couple’s yoga or a couples massage for a hands-on way to relieve stress and improve your health. Art classes offer the opportunity to express yourselves and perhaps learn something new about one another. If you’re on the adventurous side, we love the idea of a couples improv comedy class—laughter is the universal sign of happiness. Present a gift by wrapping the perfect accessory for class, like the yoga mat you can find in the Black Box Wines Rewards program – the perfect complement to a special outing.
Remember your first date? Think back to that experience and recall all the little details. Where did you go? What did you wear? What did you eat? Re-create that evening by capturing all of those aspects on Valentine’s Day. Find the scarf you wore ice skating or book the same table by the fire. Your date will appreciate your thoughtful design of an evening that was less about the fuss and more about falling in love. And of course, make sure to cap the night with a glass (or two) of your favorite Black Box Wines.
Bring Your Own – BYO – restaurants are gaining in popularity. Bring your own what? Wine of course! While there might be a small fee to bring your own wine (called a “corkage fee,” though does it count if there isn’t a cork? We’ll let you bring that up!), picking up a 500mL Go-Pack of Black Box Wines from the store generally cuts down on your bill, leaving dollars for you to purchase dessert or movie tickets later in the evening. Have fun browsing online menus together to decide what you’ll eat and what to bring. When in doubt, choose a food-friendly Black Box Sauvignon Blanc or Black Box Malbec – both likely to pair well with a range of meals.
Don’t be tempted by giant stuffed monkeys or heart-shaped candy boxes. Those things are funny and colorful, but your date will appreciate the thought behind these no-fuss, all-heart ideas. And remember the Black Box Wine. Repeat after us: Do not forget the wine.
If all else fails, throw on one of our picks for best romantic movie, pour two glasses of Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon and have yourselves romantic wines kinda night!
